One of the most important truths my clients have taught me through the years is that growth is a messy, creative, and sometimes painful process. Growth is not always predictable and it hardly ever happens in a straightforward manner.
Take nature as an example. Look out your window, or walk around outside, and examine a few plants. Everything around you grows in different cycles, under completely different conditions. That being said, there is no gardening handbook to help explain our human concept of endless growth. Nothing that is real can have an endless growth cycle without harm.
Think about this, when you push yourself too far, too fast, you will wear yourself out. When you are worn out, you can lose your connection to your inner self or to the world around you. You confuse your drive for your intuition and you then get frustrated when things don’t go exactly as planned.
Instead, try to grow more like your favorite plant, with periods of growth and rest. Allow yourself to lose a few leaves, to grow deeper roots, and to absorb more light. Embrace the community where you are planted and accept the support and nourishment offered. This will allow you to bloom in your own way, in your own time.
In business, we are constantly striving for success and live in a culture based on comparison and competition. None of those attitudes are a part of who we really are. Embrace your own growth cycle and enjoy this season of your life.
