We’ve all heard the old adage “why put off tomorrow what you can do today?” Parents often use the phrase as a way to help guide kids into doing chores or studying for an exam. Those words can be just as powerful in our adult lives. It can be tough to decide exactly what to do when faced with tough choices or uncertainty.
Here are a few examples. We all know we should probably get more sleep every night or that we need to exercise more often. Maybe you need to schedule an eye exam but you’re worried about the results, so you keep pushing it down to the bottom of your list. After all, it’s just so easy to put things off! We take comfort in routine and become anxious in the face of change.
Keep this in mind the next time you feel like avoiding a particular activity. Your actions determine your future and your future starts today. Make a concerted effort to start crossing things off your to-do list. Instead of thinking “that can wait”, try switching it up and think, “I’ll do it.”
You can’t always control your environment, but you can control your perspective. Be sure to notice how different you feel after you’ve done a few tough tasks. Chances are you will have a much more positive attitude and you will be more open to tackling other items on your to-do list. This improved state of mind can be easily accomplished if you simply commit to getting things done.
